Early Copper Age layer of the Orlovka-Kartal settlement (Izmail District, Odessa County, Ukraine)

The article discusses the materials of the Gumelnița culture, obtained as a result of field studies of the multi-layered settlement of Orlovka-Kartal. Finds of this culture have been discovered both on the fortified part of the monument (the Acropolis) and on the adjacent site, which is designated as Suburb. The cultural layer of the Early Chalcolithic on the territory of the Suburb was practically not traced, with the exception of a few household pits. At the same time, a well-defined layer of this culture was identified on the territory of the Acropolis, in which various structures were traced and rich and diverse material was collected. The article consistently characterizes the stratigraphy of the site at the Acropolis area, the studied structures of the Gumelnița culture and various categories of materials. Particular attention is paid to the chronology of the site. Analysis of the materials shows that the settlement of Orlovka-Kartal played a special role in the structure of exchange relations of that time which determined certain specific features of this site.
